The transformation from Bud-wey’s to Dash’s will begin Jan. 27 at the Kenmore Avenue store in Buffalo.
The Budwey’s store at 416 Kenmore Ave. will close at the end of the business day Jan. 26, when Dash’s Market will conduct a full inventory of the store, then reopen the next day under the Dash’s banner.
“It won’t be converted to a Dash’s overnight, obviously. It will take a couple of months to get it remodeled and get it over to our program,” said Joe Dash, the grocery chain’s owner.
Weather permitting, a Dash’s sign will immediately replace the current Budwey’s sign, but renovations are not expected to begin in and around the store until late May. Construction should be completed by late October or early November.
The new store will eventually have “everything we do in our existing stores plus more,” Dash said. Dubbed an “Anglo-Italian market,” the store will stock a large supply of imported specialty Italian foods as well as fresh pasta and fresh mozzarella-making operations.
The store will also have expanded gluten-free, natural and organic offerings, a cafe, prepared foods, fresh pastries and wood-fired pizza.
Dash said no decisions have been made about the fate of his nearby Dash’s store on Hertel Avenue.
Dash’s bought the Kenmore Avenue store in November, after Budwey’s owner, Frank Budwey, decided to retire from the grocery business and sell his properties to Olean Wholesale Grocery Cooperative.
The cooperative is expected to sell the Budwey’s stores in North Tonawanda and Newfane, but there is no word yet on a potential buyer.
