The New York Power Authority board of trustees has awarded a $19 million contract to a local electrical contractor for ongoing upgrades to its Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant.
Ferguson Electric, a Buffalo company, won a seven-year contract to upgrade 12 turbine pump units at the plant at the upper retention lake above the larger power station. The company has worked at the site for more than 30 years.
“They’re a great client of ours, and we’re glad to have this opportunity,” said Angelo Veanes, president of Ferguson.
The upgrades are part of the Power Authority’s 10-year, $460 million “Life Extension and Modernization” program, which was authorized in 2010, for the Lewiston Pump-Generating Plant to install state-of-the-art technology.
As a part of the program, Quality Inspection Services, another Buffalo company, was awarded a multiyear contract. The company will provide on-call testing and inspecting services at the Niagara project through a five-year contract not to exceed $1.25 million.
Ferguson completed work on the first of 12 turbine pump units in October of last year and recently completed a second one. The work on the two pumps, which involves the installation and overhaul of the control systems, took two years, said Bill Schreader, project manager for Ferguson.
Harry Francois, regional manager for the Power Authority in Western New York, said in a statement, “We’re especially pleased when we can retain and invest in New York-based companies, especially those here in Western New York.”
