SALAMANCA – Empire State Development will spend up to $420,000 on new lodging at Allegany State Park, a project that is a top priority for the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council that coordinates state and private investment in the area.

ASP Partners LLC, based in Bronxville, is building 28, higher-end, fully equipped cabins to meet visitor demand at the park, which at 65,000 acres is New York’s largest state park and attracts 1.5 million visitors annually.

The $2.1 million project includes the cost of design work and extending utilities to the new cabins, which were recommended as part of the state’s 10-year master plan for the park. They will be built in the Quaker and Red House areas and are expected to be completed this fall.

Officials say the new cabins will boost overnight visits at the Cattaraugus County park, increase the average length of stay and draw weddings and other destination events.

The grant to reimburse ASP Partners for construction costs was among $5.6 million in awards approved at Thursday’s meeting of the Empire State Development board.
