The University at Buffalo has begun offering an accelerated MBA tailored to medical residents and fellows, a program that university officials tout as the first of its kind in the state and one of the few offered nationally.
The university already offers dual MBA degrees targeted to medical, dental, pharmacy and other health-related students.
The new program – a joint offering of the School of Management and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences – is aimed at people who have graduated from medical school and are now pursuing a residency or fellowship in a graduate medical education specialty through UB.
About 780 young doctors are taking part in a medical residency or fellowship at a UB-affiliated hospital, according to the university.
The accelerated MBA program begins this fall and is meant to help physicians develop the business and leadership skills needed to oversee a practice, negotiate with insurers and deal with health care reform.
Dr. Michael E. Cain, dean of UB’s Medical School, said in a statement that the accelerated MBA program should make the university attractive to residents and fellows.
The MBA takes three semesters, instead of the normal four, to complete, and it must be finished before the end of the residency or fellowship.
An information session will be held from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. April 30 in the 31 Club, 31 N. Johnson Park, Buffalo. To register, visit mgt.buffalo.edu/gmemba.
