LOCKPORT – Skateland, the Lockport roller skating rink that has operated for decades, announced Monday that it will close for good after completing its regular business hours Sunday.
The Lincoln Avenue business posted the news on its Facebook page. The business, owned by the Ferraro family for 29 years, has been losing money for 19 years and was finally done in by a property tax bill it was unable to pay. Skateland would have had to pay the City of Lockport $57,255 by this Friday to avoid having the property included in the city’s tax foreclosure auction later this year.
The total owed as of the end of April was $93,214, which includes taxes, interest and penalties both on the main building at 1109 Lincoln Ave. and on an adjoining lot the Ferraros own at 1077 Lincoln.
“We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve this amazing community for nearly 29 years,” the Facebook post said. “For anyone concerned, the city and county will receive their full money due either through an auction run by us or one run by the city. We thank you for all of your support and wish you all the best in the future.”
