A new group called the Connect New York Coalition has filed a petition asking the state Public Service Commission to review the state’s telephone and telecommunications systems.

The coalition, backed by reform, consumer and labor groups, as well as 76 elected officials – including Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Assembly members Crystal D. Peoples-Stokes and Sean Ryan and State Senator Tim Kennedy – cites the number of households without phone service, the rising cost of basic phone service, and broadband access in upstate cities and rural communities as among its issues.

“We hope this petition will begin a process in which the PSC will make sure consumers get good service at an affordable price,” said Chuck Bell, programs director for Consumers Union, in a statement.
